How to stop procrastinating on a project

A practical restart: identify the friction, shrink the next task and finish one useful piece of work.

01

Name the work you are avoiding

Start with the deliverable, not a judgement about your character. “Publish a five-piece portfolio” gives you something to act on. “Become more disciplined” does not tell you what to do at 7pm on Tuesday. Write one sentence describing the result and why it matters now. If the project no longer matters, deliberately close it rather than carrying it as an indefinite obligation.

02

Find the obstruction

Ask what specifically prevents the next action. Is the task unclear? Does it exceed the available time? Are you waiting for a person, permission or skill? Is your standard for a first version undefined? This is a practical planning checklist, not a diagnosis. A reminder cannot supply a missing dependency; more planning cannot replace the first attempt.

03

Match the action to the problem

For unclear work, write one observable result. For oversized work, remove a feature or choose one sample. For a dependency, send the necessary question. For an undefined standard, describe what is sufficient to test. For a skill gap, seek instruction on the specific task. Choose the response that changes the conditions around the work.

04

Protect one short work session

Prepare the input and decide what you will make before you sit down. Illustrative example: a portfolio has stalled because its owner keeps redesigning the website. The next session is 25 minutes to select five existing pieces and write 100 words about the first. The output is a rough case-study paragraph, not a complete new website. Close unrelated tools for that session.

05

Make accountability specific

Choose someone who agrees to review the result, and say what you will send and when. “By Friday, I will send a PDF containing three draft case studies” can be checked. If you miss it, report the actual obstacle and revise the scope or plan. Accountability works as a review of the work, not an invitation to shame yourself or someone else.

Copy this restart brief

The result I care about: ____. The next obstruction: ____. One action that changes it: ____. My protected work block: ____. What will exist afterwards: ____. Who will review it, and when: ____. At the review, decide whether to continue, reduce scope, seek help or stop. This guide concerns ordinary project planning and follow-through; Realmstry does not assess or treat mental-health conditions.
